Sony, Samsung, LG - shame on you for cheaping out

I own TVs from Sony, Samsung, and LG. All are high tier models from the years 2021 to 2024. All are "Smart TVs". Another thing they share is they all have 100 Mbit LAN. Why?

WiFi is nice and convenient. Nobody wants to walk around their house with a cable attached to their phone or laptop. WiFi is great! It is also unreliable.

  • You take your laptop to the kitchen to get a snack during this long online meeting and suddenly the video breaks, a few seconds later the audio is gone too. You went too far (from your router).
  • Your neighbor changes his router, the new one is powerful and uses the same channels as yours. Suddenly your WiFi speed is not what it used to be.
  • You connect this new WiFi device. Unfortunately the manufacturer spared some $$$ by using chips with old WiFi standard, now your whole WiFi network slows down.

That's why we have LAN. It might not be good for walking around with cables, but it is great for stationary devices like PCs and TVs. And yet all those manufacturers choose to save $2 (or less) difference in the price of the LAN chips. As a result my 2021-2024 TVs are using LAN technology that was already being phased out as the consumer standard 15-20 years earlier. Not a future proof decision. I understand that 100 Mbit speeds should be enough for 4K HDR streaming, but those TVs are "Smart". This means they are platforms for 3rd party applications. As platforms they cannot predict what kind of needs these applications will have. I doubt my fellow TV application developers expect 100 Mbit limit on their network connection in the year 2026.

Next time I'm buying a TV, this is one of the things I'll be looking for. If any manufacturer is using 1 Gbit+ LAN, I'll welcome them into the 21st century and buy that product. Otherwise I'll just get a Chinese brand.
